When you're evaluating a domain you should do a search on the domain name with site: before it. This will bring up any pages that are indexed and if none are it tells you not to buy that one because it's been de-indexed. They are recoverable but you'll lose any ranking juice. If the domain name is good enough and cheap enough it can still work out.
