Why trainee salespeople use a script.
Creativity is excellent, even though many people don't think they're creative.
Most of those people are wrong, but creativity is best used once a formula is ingrained.
As a trainee salesperson, I had a telephone script to use that I had to follow.
Initially, the script felt awkward, and I didn't like using it until I overheard the best salesperson in the company using it.
He deviated from the script a little, but I realised he was customising it for the prospect.
Once he was off the 'phone, I asked him why he still used the same basic script.
"Because it works", was his reply, "and I don't have to think about it so I can listen better to the prospect."
My appointment rate went way up once I had the script down pat and could rattle it off without thinking.
Then I could get creative with responding to the prospect's answers or objections.
Many artists learn their craft by copying old masters.
They learn how to mix colours, how to apply paint, how to create form, etc.
Once they have the basic skills, they can begin creating in their own style.
It's the same in every field.
You learn what has worked for others, and then you can begin getting creative.
Many people are resistant to being told what to do.
They think they already have the answers.
Often a tertiary education gives them that impression when the reality is that the tertiary education has taught them how to learn.
This video isn't 100% relevant, but I love it anyway.
It's only 7 minutes. https://iview.abc.net.au/video/CH2003Q043S00.
It kind of covers why guidance may not seem like it, but it comes from a good place.

Brent.
P.S. In a very loose connection to the video is this guidance about getting traffic that other marketers aren't using.
You could call it a traffic GPS.
You do have to follow the directions if you want to get to your destination.
