Keep your WordPress sites current, not like me.
I’ve decided to refurbish an old website.
When I visited I was surprised to find that I haven’t updated the site for 10 years.
That leaves a WordPress site extremely vulnerable to a hack.
Fortunately, it appears that I got away with it, but it could have caused the host to shut down the site.
What I discovered when I tried to do the automatic update was that it failed.
I worked out that the step was too big so I went to Softaculous and did the update in stages.
You’ll find that in your Cpanel.
Updating from one main version to the next requires updating to the closest sub-version first or things will/might fail.
I have multiple WordPress installations on this web host that I need to update, so I’ll be busy for a while.
I’ll also add them all to the free
https://infinitewp.com/
plugin.
I’ve used this one for years as well and it has been very good.
I just don’t have all my sites in it, yet. A job for tomorrow.
If there is a drawback to using WordPress it’s that keeping current on the updates is an ongoing job.
You can bypass that by grabbing a free WordPress.com site, but you’ll have to pay a fee to have your domain there.
If you want to use the free WordPress.org software you have to pay for hosting plus do all the updates yourself.
Always a trade-off isn’t there?
Regards,
Brent.
P.S. You can set up a domain at many other places, some of which are free.
This is one of them.
