An autodidact is a person who learns independently, without professional training.
It's also known as learning by trial and error.
Unfortunately, that usually means more error than success, but the upside is that you thoroughly learn something because you have to do something to know it.
Of course, we all learn by trial and error.
It just happens to be faster if you learn from other people's errors.
As I keep telling the kids, you don't have time to make all the mistakes yourself.
I have found that it isn't necessarily helpful to go through a complete course to learn something.
No one needs a printed manual to climb a fence when walking through scrub and across paddocks even if you've never done it before.
Often all we need is a little bit of help to get over that particular obstruction.
