255 km to a wake, and a surprising revelation.
That was one way.
Three hours driving for a 2-hour wake and then home again.
As you can imagine, I didn't get much work done today.
But that's the advantage of being retired and working part-time for me.
One of my wife's cousins passed away after a battle with esophagus cancer, a particularly nasty type to develop.
There was a story that I wanted to share from the wake.
The deceased was a keen lawn bowls participant and had won multiple trophies over 15 years.
He had tried unsuccessfully to win the Single Mens Open trophy for years.
Four months before he passed away, he again participated in the competition, even taking a mattress to the clubhouse to rest between matches.
In the final match, the scores were level, with one ball left for each player.
His opponent went first and managed to score two points which would win the match.
The last bowler stood and bowled the last ball of the match.
In the best movie tradition, he cleared his opponent's two points and gained one for himself, winning the trophy for the first and last time.
I love this story for two reasons.
The terminally ill man was still determined to compete in a high-stress competition.
His friend and competitor didn't play soft to allow him to win.
He had to deserve to win.
Life is like that.
Life does not owe you anything.
Life will not make winning impossible, but you have to step up and do whatever is necessary to win.
When you do step up, the prize is better than you can imagine.
Regards,
Brent.
P.S. A super fast way to get on that winner's platform is to help others climb up.
There has never been a better time to get started than now.
The urgency is there in the community, and you are brilliantly placed to provide the helping hand that so many need.
