The big problem is the cost compared with the length created.

AI text-to-voice is pretty good these days, although you could be excused for thinking otherwise.

It can take a while to get the pronunciation of some words correct.

Mainly because there are so many words that have the same spelling, but different pronunciation depending on the context.

Some of these tools can be fine-tuned, but not all.

ElevenLabs seems to do a pretty good job across the board, but it’s not cheap.

Getting an audio clip to lip-sync with a face is challenging, and I’ve found that HeyGen does a great job at a reasonable price.

Most of the videos I’m making at the moment are short.

1 - 2 minutes typically.

If I wanted to make longer videos, they would be very expensive.

That would mean I’d change my tactics for constructing them.

I’d still do the audio in ElevenLabs, but I’d construct the video from still images in Camtasia or CapCut.

Lip-syncing wouldn’t be an issue, and the timing of image changes isn’t as critical.

Of course, the least expensive way to make longer-form videos is to do the voice-over yourself.

Use a slideshow tool to lay out the images and the visual text, then read the author notes as you record each slide individually.

If recording your own voice bothers you, listen back to your first take.

Almost everyone hates the sound of their own voice at first.

After the first few, it won’t bother you either.

I did that once.

I found a niche that was underserved inside the health market.

I could get paid commissions on sales, and the product was shipped for me.

I bought the domain name.

I built the website (it was beautiful).

Then I sat down to write the posts for the blog.

The first one was easy.

The second one was harder.

By the fourth one I struggled to write 500 words that were different to the first 3 posts.

There never was a fifth one.

The product was renamed then later withdrawn from the market.

What did I do wrong?

Pretty much everything.

I spent money on things that didn’t matter.

I niched down way too far and had nowhere to go because the domain name had the product name in it.

I had a vague idea of the type of person who might be a potential customer, but I hadn’t tested that.

These days I do things very differently.

The domain names I do buy are pretty generic, not niche.

I make sure that I could write 50-100 pages if I need to, and perhaps more.

If I get the domain name right I can refocus the whole site if I need to.

I do use AI to help with the content, but it’s always with human oversight.

I also rarely niche down very far.

I’m more interested in writing and creating from a general philosophy around a niche.

And that’s what caused me to create the Claude prompt guide.

I wanted a way to develop that overall philosophy first, then generate the prompts that keep me writing inside it.

So I stop abandoning sites because I can’t write any more content, or because the product changes into something I don’t want to be associated with.

On your hard drive there are PDFs.

I’ve got hundreds.

It came up with 7 products, suggested a funnel sequence and offered to write the follow-up emails.

That’s pretty impressive considering I was really initially just looking for a summary of what I had available.

AI story videos are trending right now, and most of them are bad.

Same themes on repeat:

HOA disputes, single dad/mum “surprise win” stories, breakups that end badly for the nasty one, military heroes hiding out in small towns, smart kids.

You’ve probably seen a dozen of them, same hook-heavy thumbnails, and once you watch one the algorithm won’t stop feeding you more.

They can be entertaining.

But there’s little to no truth in any of them, and the AI tools behind the scripts are bad at the basics, keeping characters consistent, remembering numbers they’ve already used, getting real-world facts right.

It’s like being told a story by a four-year-old: entertaining, but a tenuous grasp on reality.

I made a few as a test.

Turns out with a bit of effort you can build a story using different voices for the dialogue, makes it feel more like a story, less like a script being read.

Here’s one I made:

Voices start changing in the first few minutes and keep going throughout, not just a one-off gimmick.

It’s long, so this isn’t a “watch now” ask, just there if you’re curious.

Free traffic will need a lot of time to attract, and quite a bit of content.

Paid traffic is faster, but it’ll probably cost you some money before your conversions are higher than your spend.

To maximise your chance of getting it right means you’ll need to clearly understand your customer.

You need to know who they are, what they want, what their pain points are, are they in a position to buy and use your offer.

When you know everything about them you can ensure your landing page, lead magnet, and offer all line up for this person.

You’ll be in a much better position to make a sale.

Many people think it takes a million bucks.

That’s wrong.

Let’s start with some simple maths.

The best interest rate I can get right now is 5.3% for a 1 year term deposit.

Plonk a million bucks in there and you get $53k at the end of the term.

Roll it over and you’d keep getting that year after year. Smart move, but you still haven’t bought your freedom.

Because most people don’t roll it over.

They spend some first.

A house, a car, a holiday.

That’s not a criticism, I’d probably do the same.

Now they’ve got maybe $300k left, and they’re still going back to work, living the same life they did before, just with a nicer home and a better car.

That’s not freedom. That’s gilding the cage.

Okay, so what if you don’t spend any of it?

Keep the whole million intact, live off the interest, never touch the capital.

A high interest savings account will get you 4-5%, withdrawn as interest only.

On the full million, that’s around $4k a month.

You can live on that.

Not brilliantly, but you can live on it.

Except, one unexpected expense and you’re dipping into the capital.

Once that happens, your interest payments shrink too.

The “safe” plan turns out to be fragile.

That’s a bit of a downer, isn’t it?

The two metrics everyone talks about are list building and conversions.

Opens don’t get discussed much any more, everyone knows that number’s unreliable.

But there’s one metric that matters more than either, and almost no one talks about it.

Drum roll.

Retention.

Here’s why.

Say your list churns 5% of subscribers a month. Cut that to 2.5%, and a year from now you’re carrying nearly twice as many active subscribers as if you’d left it alone.

Now boost your sign-ups by that same amount instead.

You get more names on the list, but if they churn at the same rate, you’re just refilling a leaky bucket faster. Retention compounds.

Sign-ups don’t.

And the subscribers who stick around are your best source of new ones.

They refer people.

They reply.

They buy.

Like all of us, you want subscribers who open your emails, reply to some of them, buy your products, and stay on your list for years.

You’ll still have to earn the sign-up.

Solve one problem for them, or run them through a quiz that lands on a useful conclusion.

Whatever it is, it needs to be worth more to them than their email address is to you.

Then your first email needs to be a quality filter, not the soppy “thanks for subscribing” note that’s about 90% of what lands in people’s inboxes.

It should take a stance and ask for a response.

Something like this:

One thing most people get wrong about email: they optimise for open rates. Open rates are a vanity metric, revenue per subscriber is the number that matters. Over the next four emails, I’m going to show you the three levers that move that number. Hit reply and tell me: what’s your current open rate? I read every response.

If a new subscriber doesn’t reply within 48 hours, they’re not a good fit for your list.

Flag them for re-engagement or removal in 30 days.

Most autoresponders charge per subscriber, so clearing the decks fast saves you money.

The 1970s Stanford marshmallow experiment did happen, and early follow‑ups did find that kids who waited longer tended (on average) to have better later outcomes like test scores and BMI.

But the test itself was flawed, and the results misleading.

Because the test was carried out with a very small, unusually privileged group of children at Stanford’s nursery school.

Later studies much larger and more diverse samples found that the “marshmallow effect” is much weaker and mostly explained by background factors such as family income, parental education, and home stability.

A 2018 replication (about 900 kids) showed that once you account for socioeconomic background and parenting, the marshmallow waiting time predicts very little about life outcomes by age 15.

A follow-up in 2020 of the original Bing Nursery School kids into their 40s found no meaningful relationship between how long they waited and adult outcomes like wealth, education, or health.

​What this means in practical terms is that while delayed gratification can be important, it is not a reliable indicator of you or your child’s future.

As far as I’m concerned, instant gratification takes too long.

Unfortunately, when it comes to online success, the gratification is always delayed.

We don’t get to choose that.

It’s just the way the Internet and compounding works.

So what we have to do is get our gratification from getting a web page built, and email sent, or something done that will bring traffic.

When we give ourselves little rewards for getting small, but important, steps done we are more likely to keep doing those things.

Small steps compound up and down the staircase.

And that’s what brings the bigger gratification.

NotebookLM will do some of its own research and update the material as it goes.

That’s useful.

It’s also the part you can’t skip past.

Proofread everything it gives you.

Rewrite the awkward parts.

Check every fact it states like it might be wrong, because sometimes it is.

What you ship needs to be worth someone else’s money, that’s your job, not the AI’s.

It pays to remember that AI is neither artificial nor intelligent.

It’s just very good at making you think it is.

We tell our kids to not lie, then we proceed to lie to them daily.

My niece lied to her parents at three.

She was asked, “Who did this?”

She replied, “Jude”, her little brother.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t been born yet.

We justify most of these by calling them “white lies.”

The ones you tell to protect someone, or their feelings.

For a lot of people, the default position to any question is to lie.

The problem is, most people reading your emails or your sales page already assume you’re lying, even though 90+% of the time you’re not.

Convincing them otherwise is the actual challenge.

That’s why people used testimonials.

But now when an AI tool builds your sales page for you, it puts in testimonials too.

Fake ones.

And people can tell.

So testimonials are getting ignored, because half the time they can’t be verified anyway.

Other pages lean on statistics instead.

But we’ve all seen stats twisted so many ways to prove a point that we don’t trust those either.

Here’s a classic example of how that works (slightly simplified, but you’ll get the idea).

A drug company tests a new version against the old one. Old drug: 5% effective.

New drug: 10% effective.

So they market it as “100% more effective.”

Technically true. Also misleading.

The best way to get someone to buy, with no argument needed, is a free trial.

Either it works and they buy, or it doesn’t and they don’t. Simple.

That works fine for a lot of digital products.

Doesn’t work so well for physical ones you’ve already shipped out of town.

But there’s a way to do it with digital products too, PDFs and videos specifically, where access gets automatically revoked if they don’t buy after the trial, or they get refunded if they already paid.

If you’ve ever found a buyer for something you genuinely can’t do yourself, this is for you.

I came across a post recently from someone breaking down a business model that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

It’s called drop servicing.

Some call it service arbitrage.

Same idea as drop shipping, but instead of products, you’re reselling services.

This is another simple side hustle that could become more.

A business owner needs something done.

A video, a design, a write-up, whatever.

You find them.

You connect them with someone who can actually do the work.

You take a cut in the middle.

They get the result.

You get paid.

The person doing the work gets paid too.

Nobody’s being scammed.

This is just how agencies have worked for decades.

The only difference now is you don’t need an agency to do it.

Because the skills you need aren’t the skills being sold.

You don’t need to be a video editor, a designer, or a writer.

You need to be the person who finds the buyer and finds the person who delivers.

That’s it.

That’s the whole job.

No upfront investment.

No inventory needed either, and you don’t need an office to run it from.

You get paid by the client, then you pay for the work to get done.

The risk sits in the right place.

And here’s the part most people miss.

Disclaimer: I have not tried this, but I have read about other people doing this many times.

Many people think they don’t want or need a full-time online business.

They just want to make a bit more cash, for whatever reason.

They don’t want to spend a lot of time doing this either.

They want something simple to do and clean to manage.

If that sounds like you, this is an option.

Book flipping.

Do your own research on this, but there are apps you can download that are simple to use.

The process is simple.

Find a second-hand book, scan it’s barcode or type in the ISBN.

The app scans for places that will buy the book and give you a price.

Second-hand books range in price from $10 to $100+ depending on condition and rarity.

In thrift stores, yard sales, local markets, etc. you can often buy these books for under $5.

Some of the places buying these from you will also cover the shipping.

This is not going to make you rich, but it could make you a couple of hundred over a weekend.

That could cover your utilities bill, or most of it anyway.

This is about the simplest system I have found.

It takes almost no effort.

There is nothing in this that prevents any person from any background doing this.

But, I don’t know if it will work in every country.

When you choose a bank that’s only a block from the Police station, what could possibly go wrong?

70-year-old Lawrence John Ripple walked into the Bank of Labor in Kansas City, Kansas, and handed a teller a note that read, “I have a gun, give me money.”

Surprisingly Ripple’s goal was not money.

It was a desperate ploy to get away from his wife by going to jail.

So, after the teller handed Ripple $2,924 in cash, he simply sat down in the bank’s lobby and waited for the police to arrive.

When they arrived, he handed the money back and was arrested peacefully.

In front of the judge, he pleaded guilty and then blew it.

He explained that he had been depressed after heart surgery and was not himself.

The bank manager and the teller pleaded for leniency which the Judge granted.

The bastards.

Lawrence’s sentence?

Pay the bank for the staff wages because the bank closed for the rest of the day - $277.

Pay victims of crime levy - $100.

Three years of supervised probation.

And six months home detention.

A cruel and unusual punishment indeed.

When you build your audience and traffic on a third-party platform, you can lose it all overnight with no recourse.

I have seen this happen repeatedly over the years I’ve been online.

People making tens of thousands a month suddenly have their accounts closed, and the money stops cold.

Some of those people never recovered, and never set foot in the marketing world again.

The platforms that do this are Google search, YouTube, Facebook, PayPal, Amazon, Pinterest, Instagram, Bing, etc.

You may recognise some of those names.

Arguing with these companies to get your account reinstated never works.

They do not give a monkey’s toss about your problem.

You are too small to bother with.

There is only one way to win a fight with them.

Take the traffic you can get from them and make sure you have all your audience in a file on your computer.

You lose your Facebook account?

Who cares, start another or not.

Send an email to all your audience and start again with a different platform or account.

Email is the only traffic source you control.

Email is not dead.

Facebook sends me emails to get me back on their platform.

Every platform you go to wants you to sign up with an email address.

I trust you’ve got an active, engaged list already.

But there’s a difference between having subscribers and having a list that actually opens your emails when it matters; the difference between “I have a list” and “I sent one email and bought a 4x4 by lunchtime.”
